In light of The LAMB’s Director of the Month I’ve decided to penn Mr. Mann vs. another very talented director. This is more or less one of the first times I’ve contributed to this foundation. It’s well worth it, though.
I won’t give an introduction, I’ll hand that over to the professionals:
“A student of London’s International Film School, Michael Mann began his career in the late 70s, writing for TV shows like “Starsky and Hutch” (1975). He directed his first film, the award-winning prison drama The Jericho Mile (1979) (TV), in 1979. He followed that in 1981 with his first theatrical release, Thief (1981) starring James Caan as a safe-cracker who falls under the spell of the mob. He followed with The Keep (1983), an adaptation ofF. Paul Wilson‘s novel about a mysterious force within a Nazi fortress. He hit it big in 1984, when he produced and created the long-running TV series “Miami Vice” (1984), which made Don Johnson a household name. He followed that up in 1986 with the underrated, lesser-known TV series, “Crime Story” (1986), and the thriller Manhunter(1986) a precursor of The Silence of the Lambs (1991). He spent the next few years involved in television, directing films like L.A. Takedown (1989) (TV) and producing films like the Emmy-winning “Drug Wars: The Camarena Story” (1990). In 1992, he returned to feature film with the box-office hit The Last of the Mohicans (1992), which starred Daniel Day-Lewis and Madeleine Stowe.”

7 Example Films From Michael Mann:
Heat
The Insider
Collateral
Thief
The Last of the Mohicans
Ali
Public Enemies
vs.
7 Example Films From Sam Raimi:
Spiderman
The Evil Dead
For Love of the Game
A Simple Plan
Drag Me To Hell
Spiderman 2
Army of Darkness

I’m a Raimi fan, but Mann wins this all the way. Heat, Ali, and The Insider are all classics. Collateral and Thief are great genre movies, and The Last of the Mohicans is a fun epic. Public Enemies is solid.
For Raimi, The Evil Dead and Army of Darkness are strong, and the Spiderman movies (especially 2) are top examples from the superhero genre. A Simple Plan is a decent genre movie. These are good picks, but they don’t stack up to Mann.
Easy – Mann. The Last of the Mohicans and Heat are two of my favourite films, but I also really like Manhunter, The Insider and Collateral. For Raimi, I do like The Evil Dead films (especially Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness) and the ‘first’ Spiderman was a lot of fun. Spiderman 3 was one of the worst films I have ever seen, and I did not like Drag Me to Hell – thought it was awful too. So Mann!
Yea Mann easily. The Last of the Mohicans is fantastic. Heat is worth it just for that last heist scene in downtown LA. Collateral is wildly underrated IMO
Mann, every day of the week and twice on Sunday,
Easy one. Mann by a longshot. And you missed one of Mann’s most interesting films: “Manhunter.” It’s the first of the Hanibal Lecter films. Quite good, but I saw it so long ago I can’t say for sure if it holds up.
And “Evil Dead 2″ is better than the “Spiderman” movies. (Snooze).
I’m going to be the dissenter and go with Raimi – I’m a HUGE fan of the Evil Dead flicks, and although I think Mann has made plenty of great films, I’m generally not as entertained by them as I am by Raimi’s. Plus I think I saw Public Enemies and Drag Me To Hell on the same weekend when they came out, and was really disappointed by one and loved the other.
Thank you Tom! Go against the consensus.
Nice to see you around.
Sam Raimi. Adore the Evil Dead trilogy, liked Drag me to Hell a lot, and Spider-Man 1-3 I like mostly because it has some nostalgic value, loved them when I was younger. Still a big Mann fan, however.
I’ve seen more from Raimi, mostly due to the Spiderman series, but think Mann is probably the better director.
Michael Mann of course. My blog say’s it all! Hard to compare spiderman with Ali, except they were both super heroes! Looking forward to Mann’s “Luck” coming out in January.
I gotta go with Mann. Rami is really good with Evil Dead but really not good with Spider-Man. Especially 3. But Mann also made The Insider (Which I loathe) and Miami Vice, which isn’t that great. But Manhunter, Heat and Last of the Mohicians are fantastic.
